The 4% Rule Is a Research Baseline
The 4% rule came from research testing 30-year retirement periods across decades of stock and bond returns. It shows that withdrawing 4 percent of your initial portfolio in year one, then adjusting for inflation, succeeded in most historical cases. Use that number as a reference point, then adjust for your actual life expectancy, Social Security, and spending needs.
